Native plants grow best when matched to the right soil conditions. While many species can adapt to a range of soils, understanding the primary soil types can help you choose plants that establish more easily, require less maintenance, and thrive for years. The six soil types below are listed from the fastest-draining to the most moisture-retentive.
Sand
Sandy soil is made of fairly large particles that drain quickly and warm up fast during the spring months. It holds less moisture and fewer nutrients than its other soil counterparts, making it ideal for native plants adapted to dry prairies, dunes, and open habitats. Plants growing in sandy soil often develop deep root systems to access water below the earth's surface.
Gravel
Gravelly soil contains a high percentage of small stones mixed with coarse soil particles. Water drains very rapidly, creating dry conditions that favor drought-tolerant native plants. Many of the prairie species wildflowers, and grasses naturally thrive in gravelly soils where standing water is uncommon.
Rocky
Rocky soil contains larger stones, exposed bedrock, or shallow layers of soil. Although challenging for many garden plants, numerous native species have adapted to these harsh conditions by developing deep or spreading root systems. Rocky soils usually provide excellent drainage and are common on hillsides and dry upland sites.
Loam
Loam is considered the the holy grail of garden soils because it contains a well balanced mixture of sand, silt, and clay. It provides excellent drainage all the while retaining enough moisture and nutrients for healthy root growth. Many native plants thrive in loamy soils due to its combination of aeration, fertility, and water-holding capacity.
Organic
Organic soil is rich in decomposed leaves, compost, and other natural materials. It holds moisture well while providing abundant nutrients that support healthy plant growth. Woodland wildflowers, moisture-loving natives, and species found in forest edges often do exceptionally well in soils with high organic matter.
Clay
Clay soil is made of very fine particles that hold water and nutrients longer than other soil types. It drains more slowly and can become dense when wet, but many native plants are naturally adapted to these conditions. Deep-rooted prairie plants and wetland species often perform well in clay soils once they are fully established.
